For the Home + Craft Room + Kitchen
I enjoy shopping in home and stationery stores more than clothing stores. In NYC you can find so many cool little tchotchkes to take home as a souvenir of your trip.
*Annie and Company Needlepoint and Knitting (1763 Second Ave) Great shop! Staff is friendly and helpful.
*Knitty City (208 W 79th) Full of colorful yarns for crochet and knitting. Prices are good.
Rita's Needlepoint (303 E 81st) Friendly staff
West Village Knit and Needle (225 W 10th) Small shop but friendly staff and good website
*Artist and Craftsman (302 Second Ave, Park Slope, BROOKLYN) This is a treasure trove of art supplies for bookbinding, painting, and any other kind of art. It's large and they will ship. I bought beautiful papers here for book covers.
*Blick Art Materials (several locations) Fabulous store for art supplies, pens and journals; love the shop on Lafayette just north of Canal
*Casey Rubber Stamp Co (322 E 11th St) This is the most awesome rubber stamp shop! If they don't have what you're looking for then they will make it often while you wait. They also do custom stamps of photographs, etc. Even if you aren't a stamper, you'll love just stopping in this little, old indie shop...not many of these left in Manhattan!
EAT Gifts (1062 Madison next door to EAT) Small store chock full of toys and small gift items
Fishs Eddy (889 Broadway at 19th St across from ABC Home) Kitchen shop with vintage plates and cups from old hotels and ocean liners
*Goods for the Study (50 W 8th St) This is possibly my favorite shop in the city other than bookstores! All kinds of pencils, pens, journals, notebooks, etc
Gracious Home (Third Ave at 70th St) Upscale UES version of Bed Bath and Beyond
*John Derian (10 E 2nd St) One of my favorite shops; three shops in a row including one filled with his vintage prints made into coasters, etc
*Kalustyan's (123 Lexington near 29th St) Mideastern and Indian speciality market
*Kinokuniya New York (1073 6th Ave, across from Bryant Park) This is a Japanese-based book store that specializes in Asian books, comics and manga. Street level has current books in English; lower level has journaling supplies. This is one of my favorite stores in the city for pens, stickers and journaling supplies. I stop in here most trips.
Kips Bay Decorator Show House Each spring an UES townhouse is decorated by top interior designers. The proceeds from the ticket sales to view the house go to the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club. I have been able to tour several of these in recent years and they are SO worth the $40 ticket. If you're in NY in the spring and you'd love to see over-the-top NYC home design, then be sure to add this to your itinerary! This has not begun again since covid. I keep watching.
Knitty City (208 W 79th) Full of colorful yarns for crochet and knitting. Prices are good.
La Boite (724 11th Ave) Fantastic small shop offering spices, including custom blends, plus French-style biscuits & culinary books
MoMA Design Store (81 Spring St)
Muji (475 5th Ave) Comfortable and minimalist
*Nikoneco Zakkaya (234 Mulberry St) Cutest little stationery shop
City Papery (23 W 18th St) This was previously PAPER PRESENTATION, a favorite paper shop, but it is now City Papery and it does not have nearly the inventory it once had.
Restaurant supply stores (all along Bowery below 2nd St) I have found several things in these stores that I use all the time, like my long-handled stainless spoons
SOS Chef (104 Avenue B) Shop filled with spices, dried citrus, and vinegars
Sullivan Street Tea and Spice Co (208 Sullivan)
Sur la Table (306 W 57th St) Nice kitchen shop similar to Williams Sonoma
Yoseka Stationery Shop (63 West Street, Greenpoint, Brooklyn)
Zabar's (2245 Broadway) Incredible food emporium including kitchen goods and housewares
Fabric and Bead Shops There are several great bead shops, ribbon shops and fabric stores.
Here are a few:
Mood Fabric (225 W 37th St 3rd Floor)
B&J Fabrics (Fashion Center Building, 525 7th Ave)
Beads of Paradise ( 16 E 17th St)
Toho Shoji Beads(4 Bryant Park)
